How It All Began: A Lifetime of Football and Disappointment

My love affair with football started young. Six years old, bright-eyed, clutching a lukewarm Bovril, and watching Peterborough United get absolutely smashed 4–0 by Sheffield United.

Thanks Keith Edwards. Four goals. Cheers mate. If you were trying to teach me that football equals endless disappointment, lesson learned. At that age I thought this was normal – you go to the match, you want your team to win, and they lose by four. Character-building, I suppose.

But that was it. Hooked.

Fast forward to 1981. The FA Cup final. Spurs v Man City. This was the era where you chose your team for life. No half-and-half scarves, no swapping allegiances because your favourite player moved, and definitely no social media bandwagon fans. You picked a side and that was it – a lifelong marriage, for better or worse.

I picked Spurs.

It could have been City. Imagine that. Pre-oil money City! I could’ve strapped myself in for decades of mediocrity only to finally be rewarded with Pep Guardiola, billions in the bank, and Erling Haaland smashing goals in for fun.

But no. I went with Spurs.

And so began a lifetime of optimism, dashed hopes, and the occasional glorious cup run we all cling to like a family heirloom. It’s basically been 40 years of “this is our year” followed by “ah, maybe next season.”

And do you know what? I wouldn’t change a thing. Because football isn’t just about winning. It’s about the stories, the ridiculous moments, the fashion disasters, the chants, the glory, the heartbreak, and yes – the disappointment.
